GARBAGE DISPOSAL

ALWAYS SHUT OFF POWER BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO WORK ON GARBAGE DISPOSAL

TYPES OF GARBAGE DISPOSAL

There are mainly two types of garbage disposal.

  1. Manual:  (with the switch under cabinet or on wall near by)

  2. Automatic:  (the switch is in the drain, actives when food is feed into drain)

The most common problem with garbage disposals are:

  1. Stuck rotor blades or food cutter.

  2. Tripped motor circuit breaker

Stopped Rotor Blades

Food cutting rotor blades are located in the drain. These blades become stuck because of things like chicken bones and other hard waste.

To fix you can cut off the power, get a flashlight and carefully investigate using a knife to free the objects. If you can not clear with fork or knife, you can use a jam buster wrench to free the blade if the motor will not turn.

Tripped Motor Breakers

Objects stuck in the disposal drain will many times cause an overload in the motor that will trip a small red circuit breaker button under the garbage disposal.

When you attempt to start the disposal the unit will hum.

To reset:  push the button (located under the motor) back in to restart garbage disposal motor.

You can also push reset button to restart motor.

GARBAGE DISPOSAL TROUBLE SHOOTING
Disposal will not come on: check switch under the sink or on the wall.

Check the circuit break panel in basement.
(Note: Automatic garbage disposals may need food object in the drain to activate.)
If switches and breaker are ok pull the base plate off the bottom of the garbage disposal and test for power with circuit tester.
If there is voltage and motor hums, there still may be something in the drain.
Use jam buster.
If voltage is there and motor will not run and there is no hum, you probably need a new disposal.
Always turn off circuit breaker panel and cut off switch before removing any wire nuts and disconnecting wires.
